NHTSA: Vehicle design big part of drop in highway fatalities and injuries

GasBuddy Blog -- The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced that better-designed, safer vehicles have contributed to an overall decline in crashes, deaths and injuries on U.S. roadways.

In a new report issued this week, the agency's analysis of police-reported crash data estimates that design improvements between Model Year 2000 and Model Year 2008 cars helped save 2,000 lives and prevented one million occupant injuries in the 2008 calendar year alone, according to a press release.

Between better safety practices developed at the Department of Transportation and improved designs by automakers, we are making real progress protecting drivers and passengers nationwide...

I think fewer drivers driving less miles on the road due to high gas prices also explain fewer traffic deaths and injuries.

Amazing how bad it was before. Those nasty rich robber barons who called themselves car makers probably could hardly convince politicians to take any money. But now we have Big Brother,he's not ashamed to take all the money. It's safer now to take the money.

Have a sensor in the car that can synch with the cellphone to disallow texting from the drivers seat while in motion. Just like integrated GPS won't allow entries while in motion. Now you've saved at least another 2000 lives!

Or maybe all the bad drivers have crashed and died...silly, but how do you KNOW the reason? Next article will say lower speed limits save lives...

better-designed, safe vehicles, better drivers, driving the posted speed limit, no cell phones, no texting, no eating, no make up application, no combing hair, no shaving, more attention to driving and less driver distractions, better highways and roads too. 'Coming out of the closet' Barry's very lousy economy and less workers – so there are less drivers on the roads. Fuel with much less cost ($2/gallon) is also needed to help get this economy going again. Vehicles needed with sensors, radar and cameras always 'on' helping the driver avoid other vehicle collisions and 'watch' for people, animals and bicycles on the side of the road.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe and reliable, has a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Gov't mandates on emissions, gas mileage makes for lighter designed vehicles. It is a wonder that the safety improvements have occured.

The safety record would skyrocket if they didn't make so many extras that distract drivers and not to mention cell phones.

It certainly is humble (NOT!) of the NHTSA to assign the credit for an "overall decline in crashes, deaths and injuries on U.S. roadways" to "better-designed, safer vehicles."

We think that there are a number of factors all rolling together, not just one.

Still, what do these numbers have to do with gas prices?

Stand by for the rise in highway fatalities because of Obama's CAFE standards. Vehicles will have to be lighter to meet those standards, so expect deaths on the highways to increase when those standards go into effect.
