Cool... great mileage and powerful torque. It definitely going to be popular in Europe, but not sure in the US.

I have believed for some time that by combining the existing technologies for hybrids and diesel engines one could achieve very high fuel efficiencies, but at a cost. Both the hybrid components and the diesel engine add to the total cost.
I disagree with the author's opinion that the higher torque diesel engine is unsuited for driving a generator. This is nonsense, diesel engines drive lots of generators all over the world. In fact, the diesel's higher efficiency at low power levels would appear to make it ideal; just expensive.
Fuel prices in Europe have been pushed so high by taxes, that the higher mileage is still attractive, even with the higher sticker price.

As of 2006, both the EU & the US require ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel) so the EU market hybrid diesels will run here just fine. The fact that PEUgeot, Mercedes, Hyundai, BMW, VW, Volvo and Audi either have hybrid diesels in production for 2011 or have a prototypes with production estimated to start in the 2012/2013/2014 model years is good news. This means that this technology will be tried & refined by the time the US auto makers have to join the band wagon.
Hopefully the introduction of these smaller hybrid diesel cars will soon advance to slightly larger hybrid diesels for large sedan, SUV & pick up applications. This would be well accepted by the US market which favors larger vehicles. A hybrid diesel vehicle has the benefit of reducing green house gas emissions due to the diesel engines 30% greater fuel efficiency over a gasoline engine and the use of the electric mode for low speed commuting, shopping & errand uses.

Yep, better mileage for smaller countries with higher fuel prices mainly due to taxes.

Too bad Mercedes bailed on Chrysler, we might have had shared technology cheap.

Europe leads the way with diesel technology, but most models fail to make it to North America.
